Can I confess something to you this morning? I used to feel guilty every single time I sat down. Guilty for napping. Guilty for saying no to one more thing on the calendar. Guilty for leaving dishes in the sink while I curled up with my coffee and just breathed. Somewhere along the way, I picked up this quiet lie that rest had to be earned, and if I wasn’t busy, I wasn’t worthy.
Mama of five, wife, woman trying to build something with her hands and her faith at the same time — I know good and well what it feels like to think slowing down means falling behind. But God never once asked me to prove my worth through exhaustion. He asked me to trust Him enough to put the load down.
Rest Is Not the Opposite of Faith — It’s the Evidence of It
Think about it. When you refuse to rest, what are you really saying? That it all depends on you. That if you stop moving, everything falls apart. But when you can actually lay your head down at night, hand the thing you’re worried about back to God, and sleep in peace — that’s not laziness. That’s trust wearing pajamas.
“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat — for he grants sleep to those he loves.”
Psalm 127:2
Did you catch that? Sleep — actual rest — is called a gift He grants to the people He loves. Not a reward for the people who finally earned it. A gift. For you. Today, if you’ll receive it.
What Rest Actually Looks Like
Rest doesn’t always mean a vacation or an empty schedule, because let’s be honest, with five kids under this roof, that’s not realistic most days. Sometimes rest looks like turning off the phone for twenty minutes. Sometimes it’s sitting in a quiet room with a soft light on, letting your shoulders drop for the first time all day. Sometimes it’s simply whispering, “God, I can’t carry this tonight, so I’m giving it to You,” and actually meaning it.
I love keeping a little glow going in my own home at night — something gentle to look at while I’m winding down, a reminder that peace is part of the picture too. If you need that same small, cozy reminder, our Praying Angel Plug-In Night Light has become one of those pieces in my house that just says “breathe” every time I walk past it.
Journal Prompt
Grab your journal and finish this sentence honestly: “The thing I’m most afraid will happen if I rest is ____.” Then write this right underneath it: “But God is still God even when I’m not working.” Sit with that for a minute. Let it sink past your head and into your heart.
A small practical tip: pick one thing today — just one — that you will not do, on purpose, as an act of trust. Leave it undone and let that be your prayer.
Sweet friend, you don’t have to hold the whole world up today. Put it down. Breathe. Let Him carry what’s too heavy for your hands. You are loved whether you produce something today or not, and that truth alone is worth resting in.
Sending you so much love and a little extra grace for today,
Jena 💛
