Real Talk Believer

Real faith for real life. No sermons, no judgment, just a friend who gets it.

Can I tell you something I’m a little embarrassed to admit? Last week I sat down on the couch at 2 in the afternoon, nothing urgent on fire, and within about ninety seconds I was apologizing to absolutely no one. “I should be folding laundry.” “I should be answering that email.” “I should be doing something.” Five kids, a marriage, a house, a business I love — and somewhere along the way I picked up this quiet belief that rest is something I have to earn before I’m allowed to have it.

Maybe you know that feeling too. The to-do list that never actually ends, the guilt that shows up the second your hands are still, the little voice that says real rest is for people who have already finished everything. Friend, I don’t believe that voice is God’s voice. I think it’s exhaustion dressed up as responsibility, and I think it’s time we both stopped apologizing for needing to rest.

A Verse to Hold Onto

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” — Matthew 11:28-29

Notice He doesn’t say come to me once you’ve earned it. He doesn’t say come to me after the house is clean and the inbox is empty and you’ve proven you deserve a break. He says come, weary one, just as you are, and I will give you rest. Rest isn’t a reward we unlock. It’s an invitation we’re allowed to accept today, exhausted and unfinished and all.

Even God rested on the seventh day, and He certainly hadn’t run out of energy. He rested to show us something about rhythm, about trust, about the fact that a life well lived isn’t one that never stops moving. If the God of the universe builds rest into the pattern, maybe you and I don’t need to feel guilty for doing the same.

A Small Practical Tip

Tonight, try giving yourself a real, unapologetic stopping point. Not “I’ll rest after I finish everything,” because that finish line keeps moving. Pick a time, even just fifteen minutes before bed, and let that be sacred. I like to dim the lights and let a little glow be the last thing I see before I close my eyes, a small, visual reminder that the day is over and I can let go of carrying it. I actually keep a Praying Angel Plug-In Night Light glowing softly in our hallway for exactly that reason. Its gentle light reminds me, every single night, that I’m not the one holding everything together while I sleep. He is.

Today’s Journal Prompt

Finish this sentence honestly: “I feel like I have to earn rest by…” Then write underneath it what you think God would say back to you. Let yourself actually sit with the gap between those two voices. You might be surprised how much lighter you feel just naming it.

So here’s your permission slip for today, friend, straight from someone who needed to hear it too: you can rest. You don’t need the house spotless or the list finished or a good enough reason. You just need to be weary, and willing to come. Lay it down tonight, let the quiet be enough, and trust that the One who never sleeps is holding what you can’t carry right now.
