Real Talk Believer

Real faith for real life. No sermons, no judgment, just a friend who gets it.

Can I be honest with you? Some mornings I wake up and my to-do list hits me before my feet even hit the floor. Five kids, a marriage to tend, a house that never stays clean for longer than ten minutes, and a heart that still has its own hopes and dreams tucked inside it. On those mornings, gratitude is not my first instinct. Complaining is a lot easier. Noticing what’s wrong is a lot faster than noticing what’s right.

But I have learned, slowly and sometimes the hard way, that a thankful heart is not something that just happens to you. It is something you choose, over and over, especially on the days it feels the least natural. And when I actually do it, when I stop and name what I’m grateful for out loud, something in my chest loosens. The weight doesn’t disappear, but it gets easier to carry.

A Verse to Hold Onto

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Notice it doesn’t say give thanks for all circumstances. I don’t believe God asks us to be thankful for every hard, unfair, painful thing that happens. He asks us to give thanks in the middle of them, trusting that He is still good, still working, still holding our story even when the chapter we’re in is a hard one to read.

That’s the difference between gratitude that’s naive and gratitude that’s faithful. Faithful gratitude looks the mess in the eye and says, “I still see You here.” That kind of thankfulness doesn’t deny the hard day. It just refuses to let the hard day have the last word.

A Small Practical Tip

Tonight, before you turn off the lamp, name three things out loud. Not big, impressive things. Small, ordinary ones: the way the coffee was still warm when you finally sat down, a text from a friend, the sound of your kids laughing in the next room. Gratitude grows in the small things far more than it grows in the big ones. The big blessings are easy to notice. It’s the small, everyday ones that build a thankful heart over time, one little acknowledgment at a time.

I keep a little dish by my bed where I drop a folded note with one thing I’m grateful for most nights. It doesn’t have to be fancy. A scrap of paper and a jar will do the exact same job. The point isn’t the container, it’s the habit of looking for the good on purpose, the same way faith grows from something as small as a mustard seed into something that can move mountains.

Today’s Journal Prompt

Grab a pen and finish this sentence five times: “I almost missed this, but I’m grateful for…” Let yourself get specific. The goal isn’t a perfect list, it’s training your eyes to catch the good you might otherwise walk right past.

If you want a little reminder of how far a small, faithful seed can grow, this Mustard Seed Faith Pendant Necklace has become one of my favorite everyday pieces. A real mustard seed sealed behind glass, right over your heart, to remind you that even the smallest thankful whisper counts as faith.

Wherever you are today, whatever today’s version of hard looks like, I hope you can find at least three small things to be thankful for. Hold them close. Let them be the seed that grows into something bigger than the day you’re having. Sending you so much love, friend.
