I caught myself doing it again this morning — standing in front of the mirror, making a mental list of everything I needed to fix before I could feel good about the day. My hair, my to-do list, the laundry pile that multiplies overnight, whether I’d been patient enough with my kids the day before. As if love and peace were a prize I had to earn by being enough first.
Can I just say it plain, for both of us? You are not a project waiting to be finished before you’re worthy of love. You are already loved. Fully. Right now, in whatever state your kitchen, your heart, or your hair is in.
A verse to carry with you today
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” — Psalm 139:14
Not “will be” wonderfully made once you lose the weight, land the promotion, or finally get the house organized. Already. Fully. Wonderfully. God doesn’t love the finished version of you He’s still working on — He loves you, present tense, mid-mess and all.
Here’s what I’ve learned after five kids, a marriage that’s taught me more about grace than any sermon ever has, and fifty-one years of being hard on myself: self-love isn’t selfish, and it isn’t something the world hands you. It’s something you receive, the same way you receive grace — by simply accepting that it was already given.
Some days that looks like saying no without guilt. Some days it looks like letting the dishes sit so you can sit with your coffee for five extra minutes. And some days it looks like whispering to yourself the same gentle words you’d offer a friend who was being too hard on herself. Because you deserve that same kindness — from Him, and from you.
A small tip for today
Next time that critical inner voice starts its list, try this: put your hand over your heart and say out loud, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” It feels silly the first time. Do it anyway. Our hearts believe what our mouths keep saying, and it’s time yours heard something true for a change.
I actually keep a little reminder of this close by — a tiny mustard seed pendant I wear some days, a quiet nod to the idea that even the smallest bit of faith (in God, and in the truth that you’re worth loving) is enough to move mountains. If you want one of your own, I tucked a few into my shop, right here — a little everyday reminder you’re carrying something bigger than you feel some mornings.
Journal prompt
Grab your coffee and your journal, and finish this sentence honestly: “I would find it easier to love myself today if I believed ___.” Sit with whatever comes up. That’s usually exactly where God wants to meet you.
Friend, you don’t have to earn your way into being enough. You already are, because He already said so. Give yourself the same grace you’d hand out to anyone you love today. You’ve got this, and more than that — you’re held.
Sending you so much love today,
Jena 💛
